I refreshed the 90-plus-year-old legacy brand for growth and profit in a shrinking market while maintaining subscription rates and increasing newsstand sales.
The brief was to create “Destination Celebration.” I wanted to keep the vibe cheap and cheerful. Approachable and emotive. Easy and attainable.
For the logo we dug into the archives and found an all lowercase serif variation used briefly in the 1950s. From there we redrew the characters to feel more modern and round yet playful. The logo was intended to be altered to hold elements and design reflective of the season.
After researching and testing variations of concepts on the covers, I settled on and implemented a unique cover strategy establishing Woman’s Day as the number-one-selling monthly magazine on newsstands since 2016.

Empire was a gay man’s guide to life. We focused on fashion, grooming, culture, health, travel and relationships. Approaching pedicures we wanted a clean, sleek vibe with a bit of playfulness to tickle the toes.

Empire was a gay man’s guide to life. Three issues into the launch, I came on board. With the staff of four, we switched gears from a NYC local guide to a national gay male-focused magazine on fashion, grooming, culture, health, travel and relationships. Chic and sexy was the vibe. Every page was shoppable. Look closely or you might miss model Channing Tatum who appeared in numerous fashion spreads before his acting career.

I revitalized and reimagined Rodale’s 60-plus-year-old flagship magazine, Prevention, from logo to gutter credits, winning MIN’s Redesign of the Year Award 2011. The redesign led Prevention to increased sales and subscriptions, making it the one magazine out of 600 to increase newsstand sales in 2011 and 2012.

While serving as Publications Director of HX Media, my strategy was to update and elevate the LGBTQ+ weekly culture magazine into a sleek, fashion forward representation of the colorful, avant-garde creatives inhabiting New York City’s community and beyond.
Focusing on striking visuals, we liberated the logo from the upper left corner and integrated it along with minimal cover lines into a poster-worthy series of instantly-instagramable covers.
HX Media is a multifaceted LGBTQ+ media company, including HX magazine, HX.com, The New York Blade, theblade.net and The HX Expo Division (200K+ weekly audience).

I approached the concept of this Prevention story on sleep from the clichés. Playing off catching some Zs, counting sheep and taking the train to sleepy town we worked with the amazing artist Hugh Kretschmer to create a surreal dream like fantasy world.
